Picking an AI coding tool got harder this month. Cursor changed its pricing on October 12, GitHub Copilot now bills in credits, and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 took the top spot in the model rankings. If you're choosing the best AI coding tool right now, here's what each one costs, what it's good at, and which one we'd pay for.

What are the best AI coding tools right now?

The best AI coding tools in October 2026 are Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex and OpenCode. Claude Code leads on output quality, Copilot is the cheapest paid option, Cursor is still the most polished full editor, and OpenCode is the pick if you want something free and open source.

LogRocket updates its AI dev tool rankings every month. Its October 2026 edition put these five tools on top:

  1. Claude Code, for output quality

  2. OpenCode, which is open source and works with 75+ model providers

  3. Cursor, the best full-IDE experience

  4. Windsurf, with strong agent features at a lower price

  5. Grok CLI, free and open source if you bring your own API key

GitHub Copilot and OpenAI Codex aren't in that top five. We cover them anyway, because a lot of developers already have access through GitHub or ChatGPT, and that changes the math.

Is Claude Code the best AI coding tool?

Yes, if output quality matters most to you. Claude Code ranked first in LogRocket's October 2026 tool rankings, and it now runs on Claude Opus 5.5, which also topped WebDev Arena with a score of 1813. The cheaper Sonnet 5.5 scored 1774, close enough that you can switch to it for routine work and save your limits.

Claude Code is an agent. You describe a change, and it reads your files, edits across the codebase, runs commands and shows you what it did. It works in the terminal and plugs into editors like VS Code and JetBrains.

Claude Code pricing

  • Claude Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, with Claude Code included

  • Claude Max: $100 a month for 5x Pro usage or $200 for 20x. Max also includes Claude Fable 5.1, Anthropic's most powerful model, up to half of your weekly limit.

Claude Code has no free tier. Claude's free plan doesn't include it, so you'll have to pay for at least one month to try it.

What happened to Cursor's pricing?

On October 12, 2026, Cursor stopped selling its $20 Pro plan to new users and moved into "The X Subscription," a bundle with Grok and X Premium. The change follows SpaceX's $60 billion all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the company that makes Cursor, which took effect on August 14, 2026. Cursor is now part of SpaceXAI.

The new individual plans:

  • Free, with limited agent and chat requests

  • Plus at $8 a month, which only includes Grok models

  • Premium at $30 a month, with 4x Plus usage, cloud agents and code review

  • Super at $100 a month, with 15x Plus usage

  • Ultra at $200 a month, with 50x Plus usage

Read the fine print before you sign up. On the new plans, third-party models like Claude and GPT are billed separately at API list price. The old $20 Pro plan included $20 of third-party model usage, and the new plans include none, so if you mostly use Claude inside Cursor, expect your bill to go up. Existing Pro subscribers keep their plan for now.

LogRocket still rates Cursor as the best full-IDE experience. For new users, though, it's no longer the obvious $20 default it was over the summer.

Is GitHub Copilot still worth it?

Yes, especially at $10 a month. Copilot Pro is the cheapest serious paid plan on this list, and the free plan gives you 2,000 inline code suggestions a month plus limited chat and agent use. That's enough to find out whether AI completions help you before you spend anything.

Copilot now runs on AI Credits, and one credit is worth $0.01. Agent mode, code review, the coding agent, Copilot CLI and Copilot Chat all draw from that pool, at rates that depend on the model. Each paid plan includes base credits plus a "flex" allotment:

Every plan lists models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and xAI, among others. If your team already works on GitHub, look at Pro+ at $39: it runs Claude and Codex agents inside Copilot, so you don't need separate subscriptions for them.

What about OpenAI Codex?

Codex is the best deal if you already pay for ChatGPT, because ChatGPT Plus includes it at $20 a month. There's no separate Codex-only plan for individuals.

If you outgrow Plus, ChatGPT Pro has two tiers since April 2026: $100 for 5x Plus usage, which OpenAI pitches at long Codex sessions, and $200 for 20x. You can also buy extra credits instead of upgrading.

On the model side, OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra ranked second on WebDev Arena in October with a score of 1786. The GPT-6 rollout in ChatGPT on October 7 only changed the chat models, and the models inside Codex stayed the same.

Are there free AI coding tools?

Yes, and OpenCode is the strongest of them. It's open source under the MIT license, works with more than 75 model providers, and supports air-gapped setups for teams that can't send code to the cloud. It's free if you bring your own API key, and there's a $10 Go plan if you'd rather not manage keys.

You have a few other free options. GitHub Copilot Free gives you 2,000 completions a month inside the editor you already use. Grok CLI is free and open source with your own key and runs on Grok 4.7. Windsurf has a free plan too, with paid tiers up to $60 a month.

"Free with your own key" still costs money, though. You pay the model provider for every request, and an agent that reads your whole codebase can burn through a lot of tokens.

How much will you really spend?

Plan prices are the minimum you'll pay. Most of these tools charge for usage beyond your plan's allowance, whether through credits (Copilot, Codex), API pricing (Cursor's third-party models) or usage credits (Claude).

As a rough guide, the developer-productivity firm DX cites Cursor's own documentation putting daily agent users at around $60 to $100 a month, with heavy users above $200. Expect similar ranges from the other tools if you lean on agents all day.

A common mistake is comparing $10, $20 and $30 sticker prices without checking which models are included. A cheap plan that bills your favorite model separately can end up costing more than a pricier plan that includes it.

Our recommendation: start with GitHub Copilot Free for a week to see how much you lean on AI, then try Claude Pro for a month if you want an agent that can handle bigger changes. If neither suits you, Cursor Premium is the next thing to try. To compare the chat assistants behind these tools, see our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini guide.
