OpenAI, Anthropic and Google each shipped a new flagship model within five weeks of each other this fall, and the main plan from all three still costs about $20 a month. With prices that close, the ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini choice comes down to what you use AI for most. Below is how the three compare in October 2026, and which one we'd pick for each kind of user.

What's new in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini this fall?

All three companies replaced their main model between late September and mid-October 2026, so most comparisons written earlier this year are already out of date.

OpenAI started rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT on October 7. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users get GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users get the lighter GPT-6 Luna. The same update added "Intelligent UI," which mixes text, visuals and small interactive elements into answers and can start replying while the model is still thinking. OpenAI says that feature isn't finished yet.

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, with a 1-million-token context window. Its lineup now runs from Haiku and Sonnet 5.5 up to Fable 5.1, the most powerful and most expensive model Anthropic sells.

Google made Gemini 4 Argon generally available on October 13. In the Gemini app, you only get Argon on the paid AI Pro and AI Ultra plans.

Google also retired Gemini 2.5 Pro and Flash in October, so if a guide is still testing against Gemini 2.5, skip it.

Which AI is best for everyday questions?

ChatGPT is the easiest default for everyday questions right now, mostly because GPT-6 reached every tier at once, free users included. Intelligent UI is the change you'll notice: answers can now arrive with visuals and interactive pieces instead of plain paragraphs.

Gemini comes close if you already live in Google's apps. Its free plan includes Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chat, Canvas and image editing, which is a lot to get for $0.

Claude's free plan handles questions fine, but we'd recommend it least for casual use. Free users get Sonnet and Haiku, not Opus, and Claude earns its price on long, careful work more than on quick lookups.

Which AI is best for writing?

For writing, our pick is Claude, especially for long pieces. Most 2026 comparisons single out how well it follows instructions: tell it to cut a section, hold a tone or avoid certain phrases, and it keeps doing that deep into a long draft.

The 1-million-token context window on Opus 5.5 helps here too. You can paste a full manuscript, a long report or a stack of interview transcripts and ask for edits that stay consistent across all of it.

ChatGPT is a capable writer and a good choice if you already pay for it. Gemini's writing help is most useful inside Google Docs and Gmail, where it's built in.

If writing is your job (blogging, copywriting, reports), we'd pay for Claude Pro.

Which AI is best for coding?

Claude currently leads for coding. LogRocket's October 2026 power rankings put Claude Opus 5.5 first on WebDev Arena with a score of 1813, ahead of OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra at 1786. Claude Sonnet 5.5, the cheaper model, came third at 1774. The same report ranked Claude Code as the number-one AI coding tool.

Every $20 plan now comes with a coding agent of some kind. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, and ChatGPT Plus includes Codex (the GPT-6 chat rollout didn't change the models inside Codex). Google AI Pro raises your rate limits in Antigravity, Google's agentic coding tool.

If you code a few hours a week, any of them will do. If you code all day, start with Claude. We compare the coding tools themselves in our guide to the best AI coding tools in 2026.

Which AI is best if you use Google apps?

Gemini wins easily if you already pay Google for storage or YouTube. Google AI Pro costs $19.99 a month and bundles 5 TB of cloud storage, YouTube Premium Lite, Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Sheets, and Gemini 4 Argon with a 1-million-token context window.

If you'd be paying for that much storage anyway, the AI part costs you very little extra. Several 2026 comparisons also rate Gemini the strongest of the three with images and video, thanks to Google Lens, Photos and YouTube, and the paid plans include video generation credits in Google Flow.

On the free and $7.99 AI Plus plans you don't get Argon. You're on Flash-Lite or Flash, which are fine for simple tasks and weaker on hard reasoning.

How much do ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cost in 2026?

The main tier from all three costs about $20 a month. The differences are in the plans below and above it.

ChatGPT plans

  • Free: $0, with GPT-6 Luna

  • Go: $8 a month in the US, GPT-6 Luna with higher limits

  • Plus: $20 a month, GPT-6 Sol and Codex, billed monthly only

  • Pro: $100 for 5x Plus usage or $200 for 20x (OpenAI split Pro into these two tiers in April 2026)

Claude plans

  • Free: $0, with Sonnet and Haiku but no Claude Code

  • Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly ($200 up front). It adds Opus, Claude Code, Projects and Claude in Chrome, and you can use Fable 5.1 through usage credits.

  • Max: $100 a month for 5x Pro usage or $200 for 20x, with Fable 5.1 included up to half of your weekly limit, plus API credits

Gemini (Google AI) plans

  • Free: $0, with Flash-Lite and 15 GB of storage

  • AI Plus: $7.99 a month, with Flash, more storage and video generation

  • AI Pro: $19.99 a month, with Gemini 4 Argon, 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite

  • AI Ultra: from $99.99 a month for 5x Pro limits, with a roughly $200 tier for 20x limits and Project Genie

Claude is the only one of the three with a yearly discount on its $20 plan, which saves you $40 over a year.

Is the free version enough?

For light use, yes, and ChatGPT has the best free tier right now because free users got the GPT-6 generation (Luna) the same week paying users got Sol. Gemini's free plan is a close second thanks to Deep Research and Gemini Live.

You'll hit the limits quickly if you paste long documents, want the flagship model (Opus, GPT-6 Sol and Argon are all paid-only) or need a full coding agent.

A common mistake is paying for two of these at once "just in case." Pick one $20 plan based on your main job, keep the free tiers of the other two for second opinions, and check again in three months, because these rankings move fast.

So which one should you choose?

If you mostly...

Gemini
